Denise Howitt

Manager, EHS Systems and Compliance, University of Calgary

Denise Howitt was recognized as one of the Top Women in Safety 2021. She is a passionate health and safety professional with over 25 years of experience focussed on health and safety management systems, legislative compliance, risk assessment and injury prevention. She is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and a Canadian Risk Manager (CRM).

Denise and her small team of specialists at the University of Calgary influence and guide university processes and practices by bringing a systematic approach to managing EHS performance and compliance. Prior to joining the university, Ms. Howitt worked as a health and safety consultant providing services to provincially and federally regulated clients in multiple industries across Canada.

Denise loves to share her passion for health and safety with others and has made lifelong friends through volunteering. She is a co-founder and current Treasurer of The Women in Occupational Health and Safety Society (WOHSS), an organization dedicated to building better futures for women working in OH&S roles through education, mentorship and networking. She is also a Director for the Alberta Association for Safety Partnerships (AASP) and was previously recognized by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) with an award for Outstanding Service to the Profession.
